Oscar Pistorius Murder Trial Verdict

Today is probably the hardest day in the life of former Olympic sprint runner Oscar Pistorius because it is the day that the verdict in the death of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp is due to be given by the judge handling the case. 66 years old Judge Thokozile Masipa will make public her decision on how Pistorius should continue his life starting today. Would today be the day that Pistorius start spending the next 25 years of his life in jail or would he go free and start a new life? Judge Masipa is the sole overseer of the trial but she has appointed two "assessors' to help her make the best verdict.

The prosecutors claim that Steenkamp was shot by Pistorius on Feb. 14, 2013 after a heated argument. If the court finds Pistorius guilty of the crime he could be facing a 25-year sentence.

But the 27-year-old sprinter dinied that a heated argument ensued before the shooting. His claim is that he has mistaken his girlfriend as an intruder hiding in the bathroom when he awoke in the night and heard noises in the bathroom. He shot her through the closed door of the bathroom.

During his bail hearing months ago, Pistorius claimed in a statement that was read by his advocate that after he found out that he shot his girlfriend by mistake he immediately put on his prosthetic legs and tried to break down the closed bathroom door by kicking it. But it did not work so he took a cricket bat and bashed down the door. When he finally came into the bathroom he found Steenkamp lying on the floor in a pool of blood. He carried her out of the bathroom and downstairs. He then seek help.
